A population of cyclomorphic Bosmina coregoni was studied in Lake Östersjön, southwestern Sweden and results from field samples collected in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991 are presented. Animals collected in summer have remarkably higher carapace and prolonged antennule compared to what we call the normal morph. In 1991 the extreme morph reach its maximum body length, body height and antennule length in July to September. The occurrence of the extreme morph coincide with the hatching of the predaceous cladoceran Leptodora kindtii.The two morphs fluctuate in abundance and in relation to each other. In early spring only the normal morph occurred in the samples followed by a period of about two months when the two morphs were found together, in July only the extreme morph was found. In September the two morphs were again present in the lake. As has been shown for other cladoceran, the conspicuous carapace and antennule could be an adaptive response that decreases mortality due to invertebrate predation. Spectacular features like these are likely also accompanied by some sort of costs.  相似文献

Size, age and number of offspring at the first and subsequent tworeproductions were compared in Daphnia treated with cues frominvertebrate predators (adult Cyclopoida fed Daphnia)and from crushed conspecifics. Daphnia in the presence ofinvertebrate predators had earlier maturation, greater size atfirst and subsequent reproductions and a larger number of offspringthan control animals, while the opposite (later maturation andsmaller size at subsequent reproductions) happened when Daphnia were treated with homogenate from crushedconspecifics.  相似文献

Cotyledons excised from dark-grown seedlings of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) were cultured in vitro under UV radiation at different wavelengths, obtained by passage of light through cut-off filters with different transmittance properties. Growth and the synthesis of chlorophyll (Chl) in cotyledons were inhibited and malondialdehyde was accumulated upon irradiation at wavelengths below 320 nm. Exogenous application of scavengers of free radicals reversed the growth inhibition induced by UV-B. Measurement of the fluorescence of Chl a suggested that electron transfer in photosystems was affected by UV-B irradiation. Experiments were performed to test the acceptability of two palatable, cryptic caterpillars, the tobacco hornworm,Manduca sexta, and the cabbage looper,Trichoplusia ni, reared on different diets, to the Argentine ant,Iridomyrmex humilis. Ants preferred larvae reared on artificial diet, groundcherry, or cowpea to tobacco-reared larvae. Ants also preferred larvae reared on artificial diet without nicotine to larvae reared on diet containing nicotine (5% dry wt). Experiments were also performed to test the response of ants to larval extracts and chemicals applied to the surface of palatable prey. Ants did not respond differently to larvae of the potato tuber moth,Phthorimaea operculella, treated with larval extracts or regurgitate from tobacco-reared larvae compared to artificialdiet-reared larvae, but ants were deterred byP. operculella larvae treated with nicotine compared to untreated larvae. The results of this study indicate that caterpillars can derive at least some degree of chemical protection from their food plant without sequestering and storing plant compounds and without the development of elaborate aposematic characteristics.  相似文献

Intergroup transfer by males is nearly universal among social primates. Furthermore, among the most frequently studied monkeys-savanna baboons and Japanese and rhesus macaques—females typically remain in their natal groups, so troops are composed of related matrilines. These facts strongly support two major theories: (l) that kin selection is a powerful force in patterning sociality (if one is to live in a group, one should prefer a group of one’s relatives); and (2) that the ultimate explanation for intergroup transfer is the avoidance of inbreeding depression (though both sexes would prefer to live with kin, one sex has to disperse to avoid inbreeding and for a variety of reasons the losing sex is generally male). Substantial rates of transfer by females in social species with routine male transfer would cast doubt on both ideas. In fact, evidence reviewed here indicates that female transfer is not unusual and among folivorous primates (e.g., Alouatta,the Colobinae) it seems to be routine. In addition to casting doubt on the demographic significance of inbreeding avoidance and favoring mutualistic and/or game theory interpretations of behavior over nepotistic ones, this finding supports the hypothesis that predator detection is the primary selective pressure favoring sociality for many primates. Finally, while female bonding [sensuWrangham, R. W. (1980), Behaviour75:262–299] among primates appears to be less common than generally believed, the observed correlation between female transfer and morphological adaptations to folivory provides empirical support for Wrangham’s model for the evolution of female-bonded groups.  相似文献

The limnetic and littoral zooplankton were studied during summer 1989 in Triangle Lake, a humic acid (pH 4.9) bog lake in Ohio, USA. The limnetic zooplankton showed low species richness and biomass, and dominance by the rotifers Kellicottia bostoniensis and Polyarthra vulgaris. In the littoral, species richness and biomass were markedly higher, and the crustaceans Alona guttata, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, Chydorus sphaericus, Simocephalus serrulatus and Tropocyclops prasinus, and the rotifer Ascomorpha ecaudis were the dominants. The extreme rotifer dominance and lack of cladocerans in the limnetic zone were likely the result of Chaoborus predation. A pronounced mid-summer decline in cladoceran biomass in the littoral was likely due to predation by T. prasinus and Utricularia (bladderwort).  相似文献

Short term, replicated experimental alteration of densities of a predatory water mite Piona exigua Viets, inside 0.45–0.475 m3 litre enclosures, revealed little evidence of the effects of predation on the number and relative abundance of the enclosed zooplankton species. Predation rates more closely approximated those estimated from single prey functional response experiments in the second experimental period (December) than in the first (March). In December Daphnia was the only susceptible taxon present in large numbers, whereas in March, Ceriodaphnia and Chydorus were also present. This result is consistent with laboratory findings that predation rates are lowered in the presence of more than one prey type.The difficulty of obtaining evidence for significant effects of these planktonic predators is in part due to changes in the preferred prey species in the diet of Piona depending on stage and sex of the mite and to aspects of experimental design. The wide variability between replicate enclosures at each predator density reduced the power of the statistical analyses used to test the null hypothesis. Enclosures with no predators are necessary to investigate the effects of enclosure on the zooplankton prey, since these effects may outweigh those due to predator consumption.  相似文献

Abundances of white sucker, 100–500 mm FL, were not significantly different among the epilimnia, metalimnia and portions of the hypolimnia shallower than 20 m in each of two lakes. However, small suckers < 200 mm were captured most frequently in the epilimnion and no white suckers were captured in the deepest region, 20–38 m, of the two lakes. White suckers consumed prey from all three temperature zones in each lake. Prominent food items were Hyalella azteca and the chironomid larvae Heterotrissocladius, Djalmabatista and Procladius. Despite differences in relative densities of benthic invertebrates among thermal zones of the two lakes, suckers in neither lake foraged exclusively on prey of epilimnetic origin. Suckers captured in the metalimnia foraged on invertebrates that were common to all three thermal zones. And, only 0–4% of the suckers captured in the hypolimnia of the two lakes contained prey that were unique to the epilimnia. Suckers caught in the hypolimnia mainly consumed deep water invertebrates; 83% of the suckers foraged in the metalimnion and hypolimnion of Islets Lake and 45% foraged in the hypolimnion in Burnt Island Lake. Consequently there was little evidence of a massive inshore feeding migration followed by a post-feeding return to the hypolimnion. Northern pike and lake trout rarely fed on white suckers in these lakes and thus piscivory was an unlikely factor in the observed distribution of suckers.  相似文献

Zooplankton of the fish pond reveals a two-year periodicity, which is induced by the two-year cycle of fishery management. In the first year of each cycle, the biomass of large cladocerans prevailed — mainly adult specimens of the species Daphnia pulicaria Forbes, which were absent in the second year. The species Daphnia galeata Sars was present in both years, however, it is more numerous in the second year. The fraction of small zooplankton (rotifers, nauplii, Bosmina, newborn Daphnia) was abundant in the second years, but scarce in the first years, respectively.  相似文献
